The Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus carpenteri) is an exceptionally vibrant and charismatic marine fish featuring a brilliant neon orange-to-red body marked with several horizontal, electric-blue pinstripes. It is highly celebrated in the saltwater hobby for the spectacular courtship display of mature males, who can instantly "flash" their colors into blinding metallic pigments while erecting an impressive, sail-like dorsal fin accented by long, sweeping red filaments. Known for its small adult size and active nature, it is a perfect model citizen for introducing color and movement to mid-water columns.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons or larger for a single specimen, though 55 gallons or more is highly recommended if you are keeping a small harem to manage swimming boundaries.
Aquarium Decor: Plentiful networks of live rock arranged with open middle swimming lanes and small caves; it requires loose rock crevasses to retreat into and spin its natural protective mucus sleeping cocoon at night.
Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C).
Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025.
pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
Care and Feeding
Diet: Carnivorous planktivore; possesses a high metabolism and feeds strictly directly out of the open water column. It requires small, frequent daily feedings of vitamin-enriched mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality mini pellets.
Reef Safe Rating: Reef safe; it is completely peaceful and harmless toward small polyp stony (SPS) corals, large polyp stony (LPS) corals, soft corals, and even the smallest ornamental invertebrates, making it a staple reef species.
Temperament: Peaceful; it is exceptionally docile and makes an ideal companion for peaceful community reef layouts. It should never be housed with highly aggressive tank mates, and to see its famous "flashing" behavior consistently, it is best kept as a single male alongside a small harem of two or three females.
