The Diamond Sleeper Goby (Valenciennea puellaris), also universally known as the Orange-Spotted Sleeper Goby or Maiden Goby, is a highly popular and functional marine fish featuring a sleek, elongated white body beautifully detailed with horizontal rows of vibrant orange dashes and glowing iridescent blue dashes across its cheeks. Celebrated in the saltwater hobby as an elite, tier-one sand-sifting utility fish, it spends its entire day scooping up mouthfuls of substrate, filtering out organic waste through its gills, and cleanly spitting out pristine sand back onto the bottom.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 30 to 40 gallons or larger; requires a spacious footprint to provide enough foraging territory.
Aquarium Decor: It absolutely demands a vast, open, and thick sandbed (at least 1 to 2 inches) composed of fine, smooth aragonite substrate. It cannot survive in bare-bottom tanks or setups with heavy crushed coral rubble that can damage its delicate mouth parts. All structural live rock should sit firmly on the glass bottom, as this fish will actively burrow underneath rockwork and can cause unstable aquascapes to collapse.
Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C).
Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025.
pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
Care and Feeding
Diet: Carnivore; while it continuously filters micro-fauna and detritus from the sand, it will quickly starve in a closed system on natural prey alone. It must be offered frequent daily portions of meaty frozen foods like vitamin-enriched mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, and high-quality sinking pellets targeted directly toward the sandbed.
Reef Safe Rating: Reef safe; it is completely harmless to small polyp stony (SPS) corals, large polyp stony (LPS) corals, and soft corals, though it is notorious for dropping sand directly onto low-lying corals resting on the substrate.
Temperament: Peaceful; it is exceptionally docile toward unrelated community tank mates. It will show territorial aggression toward its own species or other sleeper gobies unless they are introduced as a true, bonded male-female pair.
