The Exquisite Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus exquisitus) is a highly vibrant and visually breathtaking marine fish featuring an incredibly complex color pattern that varies dramatically depending on its regional ocean origin. Most commonly, it displays an intense olive-green or reddish-purple body detailed with neon green accents, a brilliant splash of pink or red behind the pectoral fin, and a signature, ink-black eyespot on the upper base of its tail fin. Prized as a magnificent reef showpiece, it brings active, high-velocity movement to the middle and upper water columns of an aquarium.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 55 to 70 gallons or larger; as a rapid, continuous swimmer, it requires adequate horizontal distance to stretch its fins and stay healthy.
Aquarium Decor: Abundant live rock formations arranged with plenty of open swimming channels paired with tight caves and ledges where it can safely retreat and sleep in its natural mucus cocoon at night.
Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C).
Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025.
pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
Care and Feeding
Diet: Carnivorous planktivore; feeds directly out of the open water column, requiring multiple daily feedings of vitamin-enriched mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes to maintain its intense color.
Reef Safe Rating: Reef safe; it is completely harmless toward all types of small polyp stony (SPS) corals, large polyp stony (LPS) corals, soft corals, and ornamental clams, and it will not bother small shrimp or crabs.
Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive; it is docile toward unrelated community tank mates, but adult males can become highly territorial toward other fairy wrasses or similarly shaped open-water fish if added after them.
