The Golden Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas), also known simply as the Midas Blenny, is a highly popular and charismatic marine fish featuring a brilliant, solid golden-yellow body that can subtly shift to shades of peach or deep amber depending on its mood. Prized for its expressive blue-rimmed eyes and its unique, eel-like swimming motion, it brings exceptional personality and color to a reef tank. Unlike many other blennies that crawl strictly along the rockwork, this species spends much of its time hovering gracefully in the open water column.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons or larger; needs sufficient open room for vertical swimming patterns alongside adequate rock coverage.
Aquarium Decor: Plentiful live rock structures with small, tight holes or empty barnacle shells where it can back itself into tail-first to perch and observe the tank.
Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C).
Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025.
pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
Care and Feeding
Diet: Omnivorous planktivore; requires a varied diet consisting of vitamin-enriched mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped marine meats, high-quality flakes, and supplemental algae or spirulina preparations to keep its gold coloration vibrant.
Reef Safe Rating: Reef safe; it is completely harmless to large polyp stony (LPS) corals, soft corals, polyps, and macroalgae, making it an ideal choice for peaceful reef systems.
Temperament: Peaceful; it is generally a docile community fish, though it may occasionally show territorial aggression toward similar-looking fish, other blennies, or small bottom-dwellers if the tank is crowded or lacks enough perching spots.
