The Nassarius Snail (Nassarius sp.) is an exceptionally popular and highly functional marine gastropod featuring a smooth, spiral shell and a distinct, tube-like siphon that it extends upward like a tiny snorkel. Celebrated in the saltwater hobby as an elite member of the clean-up crew, this industrious invertebrate spends most of its time completely buried beneath the sandbed. The moment food touches the water, its highly advanced olfactory senses trigger it to burst out of the substrate like a mini submarine to locate and consume organic waste.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons or larger; highly versatile and suitable for any system size, provided there is an established substrate layer.
Aquarium Decor: It absolutely demands a deep, soft sandbed (at least 1 to 2 inches) of fine or medium-grade aragonite substrate. It cannot thrive in tanks with bare bottoms or coarse, heavy crushed coral rubble that prevents burrowing.
Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C).
Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.023 – 1.025; sensitive to rapid osmotic shifts and high copper levels.
pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
Care and Feeding
Diet: Scavenger and Detritivore; unlike Turbo or Trochus snails, it does not eat film algae. Instead, it feeds strictly on leftover fish food, fish waste, and decaying organic matter. If the sandbed is overly clean, supplement its diet with sinking shrimp pellets or small pieces of frozen seafood.
Reef Safe Rating: Reef safe; it is completely harmless toward all types of small polyp stony (SPS) corals, large polyp stony (LPS) corals, soft corals, and clam mantles.
Temperament: Peaceful; it is entirely docile and acts as an excellent utility resident by continuously shifting, sifting, and aerating the sandbed, which prevents toxic anaerobic pockets from forming.
