The Orange and Yellow Trachyphyllia Coral (Trachyphyllia geoffroyi), frequently referred to as an Open Brain Coral, is a beautiful large polyp stony (LPS) coral featuring a deeply folded, highly inflated orange mantle that transitions into a soft yellow or gold center. Popular among hobbyists for its impressive ability to expand its flesh during the day and its bright fluorescence under actinic blue lighting, it is a hardy, resilient sandbed centerpiece well-suited for beginner and intermediate reefers alike.
Tank Requirements
Lighting: Low to moderate (50–120 PAR); direct, high-intensity lighting will quickly cause its delicate multi-colored mantle to shrink, recede, or bleach.
Water Flow: Low to moderate; requires a gentle, indirect current to help clear away detritus without forcefully blowing the flesh against its sharp internal skeleton.
Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C).
Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.023 – 1.025.
pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
Care and Feeding
Placement: Bottom of the aquarium, placed flat on a soft sandbed or a low, smooth rock flat where its expanding tissue will not scrape against rough edges or get punctured by structural masonry.
Diet: Photosynthetic via zooxanthellae, but exhibits a massive feeding response at night and grows best when spot-fed weekly with mysis shrimp, chopped krill, or fine pellet foods.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; it does not standardly extend long sweeper tentacles but can expand its flesh significantly during the day, meaning it requires a few inches of clearance from neighboring corals.
