The Red Stripe Eibli Angelfish (Centropyge eibli), also known as Eibl's Dwarf Angelfish or the Blacktail Angelfish, is a popular, active saltwater species featuring a pearlescent grey body marked with vertical orange-to-red wavy stripes, an orange ring around the eye, and a striking black tail trimmed in vibrant sapphire blue. One of the larger dwarf angel species, it is highly favored for its striking graphics and relative hardiness, though it demands ample swimming space and structured territories to thrive in a home aquarium.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 55 to 70 gallons; smaller tanks dramatically increase its territorial aggression towards peaceful tank mates.
Aquarium Decor: Abundant live rock formations arranged with plenty of caves, overhangs, and swimming channels to graze on microalgae and seek shelter.
Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C).
Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025.
pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
Care and Feeding
Diet: Omnivorous; requires a varied diet consisting of high-quality marine pellets, flake foods, frozen mysis or brine shrimp, and regular supplements of dried sheets of marine algae (nori) or spirulina to maintain its bright pigments.
Reef Safe Rating: Reef safe with caution; while it primarily grazes on algae film, it is notorious for nipping at stony coral polyps, clam mantles, and fleshy soft coral tissue if it becomes bored or underfed.
