The Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto), also known as the Fairy Basslet, is a highly popular and stunning marine species featuring an intense, high-contrast coloration that divides its body cleanly into a bright violet-purple front half and a vibrant golden-yellow rear half. Accented by a unique black streak running through its eye and a tiny black spot on its front dorsal fin, it is celebrated for its exceptional hardiness and striking appearance. Native to the deep reef walls of the Caribbean, it adds dramatic color and a quirky personality to smaller reefs by frequently swimming upside down or sideways along the undersides of rock ledges.
Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons or larger; its localized habits make it an exceptional candidate for nano reef layouts, provided there is enough cover.
Aquarium Decor: Plentiful live rock structures configured with multiple small caves, tight overhangs, and narrow crevices where it can claim a home territory and retreat when startled.
Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C).
Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025.
pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
Care and Feeding
Diet: Carnivore; an exceptionally easy and eager feeder that readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood preparations, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes.
Reef Safe Rating: Reef safe; it is completely harmless toward small polyp stony (SPS) corals, large polyp stony (LPS) corals, soft corals, and ornamental clams, and it will not bother large cleaner shrimp.
Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive; highly docile toward unrelated open-water tank mates, but it will fiercely defend its chosen rock cave. It will aggressively open its mouth wide to threaten any intruders, other basslets, or similarly shaped purple-and-yellow fish (like the False Royal Gramma or Dottybacks) that venture too close to its home territory.
