The Orange and Green Stripe Scolymia (Homophyllia australis) is an exquisite, doughnut-shaped large polyp stony (LPS) coral displaying an alternating pattern of fiery orange and neon green bands radiating from its center. Highly valued for adding bold geometric contrast to the bottom of a reef tank, it thrives under low-to-moderate lighting and calm currents, offering a hardy but visually spectacular addition for collectors.
Tank Requirements
Lighting: Low to moderate (30–120 PAR); subdued, indirect illumination is best for maintaining its brilliant, contrasting pigments.
Water Flow: Low and gentle; a mild, swaying current is required to clear away waste without causing the coral to retract against its sharp skeletal rim.
Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C).
Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.023 – 1.025.
pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
Care and Feeding
Placement: Bottom of the aquarium, placed flat on a stable sandbed or nestled securely into low-profile rubble where it cannot slide or flip over.
Diet: Photosynthetic via zooxanthellae, but benefits heavily from target feeding; it readily consumes meaty foods like mysis shrimp or specialized pellets when its feeding tentacles expand.
Temperament: Peaceful; it does not standardly produce aggressive sweeper tentacles, allowing it to touch other color variations of the same species without conflict.
