The Tiger Lobophyllia (Lobophyllia robusta or Lobophyllia sp.) is a premium and visually striking large polyp stony (LPS) coral featuring thick, fleshy lobes with an alternating, striped pattern that resembles tiger camouflage. Highly prized by collectors for its bold banding—usually mixing combinations of orange, red, green, or grey—it is a resilient coral that adds incredible texture and structural contrast to a reef tank.
Tank Requirements
Lighting: Moderate (50–150 PAR); stable, indirect light is crucial, as direct or overly intense lighting can cause its fleshy stripes to fade or bleach.
Water Flow: Low to moderate; requires a gentle, fluid current to prevent waste from settling in its deep grooves without forcing its flesh against the sharp skeleton.
Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C).
Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.023 – 1.025.
pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
Care and Feeding
Placement: Bottom of the aquarium, resting comfortably on a flat rock or nestled securely onto the sandbed with plenty of clearance from shifting substrate.
Diet: Photosynthetic via zooxanthellae, but possesses a major nighttime feeding response and grows significantly faster when target-fed mysis shrimp or pellet foods.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; it can extend long, invisible sweeper tentacles after dark to sting competitors, meaning it requires several inches of isolation from other coral types.
